Bianca goes to school with my little boy, Henry. That’s how I got lucky enough to spend a few minutes with these young ladies. And as gussied up and precious us as they were, these girls got down on the ground, ran after dandelions, chucked them hither and yon, jumped over the stream and played hard. Kids and spring are unstoppable and perfect.

Meet Bianca. Henry can’t even say her name without smiling. She’s in the middle. So is Henry. They must have so much to talk about.

Meet the oldest sister, Eva.

Minutes after all that snow melted, these two invited us to spend an afternoon with them at Lake Ann a. Lake Anna which is an hour away felt like a fabulous world away. We brought the five of us and dinner rolls. In exchange we were promised split pea soup and the good company of family.

Before we left home I bickered with myself about whether or not to bring my camera. This is not unusual. I know if I bring it I’ll want to use it. I know if I don’t bring it I’ll wish I had. It’s a no win situation since either way I’m always partially distracted by pictures I am taking or, worse, would have taken if I had brought my camera.

In any case, this time I brought my camera and as the sun got low I couldn’t help myself and Brianne and Josh were kind enough to oblige. Thanks for that, guys.

These two are good and done with college and are now enjoying every which corner of Baltimore by foot and bike. Brianne is a fellow shutterbug. Check her out. Sometimes I go looking for THIS shot of hers because it calls me back. And Josh is a Plastics Engineer. Despite all his enthusiastic and engaging explanations about what he does I can only tell you that he engineers plastics.

I love the striped street. Thanks to the leaf-less trees for that touch.

oh baby, it’s a wild world

I’ve been breaking out the summer hand-me-downs for Josie. This brings me more joy than blooming flowers and Cadbury mini eggs. The pink tank came from my friend Jess who made me my first mix tape ever back in the 80’s. On that mix she introduced me to Cat Stevens. And this shirt reminds me of her which makes me think of Cat Stevens and how twenty plus years later we’re passing clothes instead of notes. Wild. World.

Jess and I were on the same field hockey team one year. At the end of the season our coach handed out awards to each of us. I got MOST AGGRESSIVE which mortified me. She got CUTEST IN HALF-SHIRT which was totally true. Two kids later, I bet she’d still look great in a half shirt. But not as cute as Josie in this shirt.

While Josie is donning all her newest duds for the camera, the boys are at post studying how the world works.

Ryan & Maria Reilly!

Here’s the winning haiku submitted by Ryan for his Maria.

we have faced it all

taking care of each other

seventeen years strong

Their story is heartbreaking and inspirational all in one. In 2008, Liam, their 6 year old son, was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain stem tumor. Last June he passed away after an awe-inspiring battle. Ryan and Maria shared the journey HERE with rawness and humility and joy. Liam’s life and fight has made me live and fight harder. It is impossible not to be changed by their experience.

I do not have enough exclamation points to tell you how excited we are to do this for them. Maria and I go way all the way back to 6th grade homeroom with Mrs. Brouillette. That was over two decades ago. Gulp.
